POGO Chastises the Department of Health and Human Services for Faulty Planning in Pandemic Flu Vaccine Production

September 30, 2009

The Department of Health and Human Services' announcement yesterday in testimony to Congress that the first shipments of the pandemic flu vaccine were being made as early as this week came as a relief to those anxious about the vaccine's availability.  However, in a letter to Secretary Sebelius today the Project On Government Oversight faulted the agency for failing to anticipate the inability to produce the vaccine in quantities sufficient to meet public health demands later this fall.

POGO's recommendations for mitigating the effects of the faulty planning and preventions of similar deficiencies in the future can be found on its website.

Founded in 1981, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that champions good government reforms. POGO's investigations into corruption, misconduct, and conflicts of interest achieve a more effective, accountable, open, and ethical federal government.
